The leopard, also called panther, is felid threatened of extinction. Certain subspecies such as the Amur panther or the Persian panther and the Clouded Leopard practically disappeared in a wild state. The cause of their scarcity is the development growing of agriculture and the human demographic trends which require more and more space to the detriment of the animal life. As opposed to what one could believe, the black panther is not a species except for but quite simply a panther. Their black color is a genetic defect due to the increase in pigments in the skin and the hair which one calls melanin. It is a defect which one also finds in the jaguar and the cougar.
