IFAW saves Gena the bear cub
STRANGE DISCOVERED
At the time of a visit at the office of the public prosecutor in the area of Smolensk in Russia, in the middle of a certain number of objects preserved like proof for various crimes, the members of the IFAW discovered an alive orphan bear cub.
May 27th, 2009, a police officer intercepted a car transporting an unexpected passenger, a small bear cub. The driver as well as the other passengers affirmed that they had found it in the forest not far from the Arkhipovka village and would have decided to give it to the Moscow zoo. The police officers, not easily deceived, seized the bear time that the ciconstances of the arrival of the animal in this car are clarified. It was lodged temporarily at the village of Petushky at a man who had a suitable and sure enclosure.
According to the elements of the investigation, the mom of Gena died. Whereas it hibernated, the hunters forced it to leave its den. The exit was fatal for him… the hunters did not hesitate to only cut down it coldly leaving Gena. The good time of the driver was not established for as much.
One will have needed much time in order to make a decision on the fate of the small orphan. It is difficult to think what it has of feeling whereas he was kept in the enclosure like a simple material proof. When the situation was clearer, the IFAW taken measurements which were essential. Papers necessary to obtain the authorizations in order to admit the bear cub in the IFAW Bear Rescue Center, located in the area of Tver, were brought to the public prosecutor of the area of Smolensk.
IFAW BEAR RESCUE CENTER
Created a dozen years ago, the center of rehabilitation of the bear cub orphans of IFAW is located at Bubonitsy, in Russia. It is directed by an eminent specialist in the brown bears, Professor Pazhetnov, which worked out a program of rehabilitation recognized with the international level.
It is the single center in the world which makes it possible to ensure a rehabilitation the orphan bear cubs. Since its creation, they are 120 of them which could find nature thanks to the work of IFAW.
To rehabilitate an animal via this center requires several months of work. Most important for the IFAW is to transmit the assets necessary to the bear cubs so that they can quickly evolve in a way independent at their exit of the center of Bubonitsy. Each slackened animal is equipped with a transmitting collar making it possible to the team of IFAW to make sure of the success of the rehabilitation.

December 4th, 2009, in an open letter, the singer Patricia KAAS invites to go on the www.actuanimaux.com site in order to save, at her sides, Gena, the small orphan victim of winter hunting for the brown bear practiced in Russia.
Alerted by the fate of Gena, Patricia Kaas declares : "Its history is that of the winter hunting of the brown bears in den, a cruel practice still in progress in many Russian areas. Each year, this hunting leaves hundreds of bear cubs of a few days delivered to themselves. Rare are those which survive. However Gena has escaped with this fatal outcome. Gena is a survivor !".
If Gena is from now on one of the boarders of the Center of rehabilitation for orphan bear cubs of IFAW where a chance is offered to him to recover one day its stolen freedom, the singer, engaged, precise : "They is together that it is necessary for us to denounce the cruel practices and it is still together that we can offer to the orphan bear cubs survivors, a chance to be reintroduced in nature".
A NEW CHANCE
Today, Gena is out of forty and joined recently Ostakh, a bear which arrived earlier in January. The officers of the center are sure that the bear cubs will become friendly and will be happy to grow together and will become "true" bear.
In spring 2009, 4 bears were slackened in nature after their complete cycle of rehabilitation all provided with a receiving collar which will make it possible the center to learn some from advantage on their subject during their first year in the forest. According to the personnel of the center, all the slackened bears which are currently under observation are healthy and safe and succeeded in adapting to their new life far from the man. Gena will have, it also, a day this chance thanks to the devotion whose proof its men and these women make working in this center of rehabilitation.
