PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Measuring of 2.75 m to 3.40 m (with the tail) and heavy up to 315 kg, the barbary lion is much taller and more powerful than the African lion.
It is true that the Siberian tiger remains largest of felid (4 m of the head to the tail and 384 kg maximum), but it is much less high (1.10 m with the tourniquet).
This species of lion was the lion of gladiators, often besides the latter often made fight lions and tigers, whose lion left practically always victorious at the time of its battles.
The Barbary lion has a brownish yellow peeling and its mane is provided of all the lions. It goes down until on the sides, and can be completely black. The head of this lion is enormous, almost as much as that of the Siberian tiger.

DISTRIBUTION
He lived in the north of Africa, in particular around Morocco, of Egypt and in the mountains of the Atlas from where its name.
Unfortunately, this lion completely disappeared from these areas since 1922, date on which the last was cut down. There remain today nothing any more but some specimens distributed in zoos. There are many projects of reintroduction most beautiful and most majestic of the lions.
THE TRUE KING
This lion was much victim of the gladiators, and it was also the lion of César. It was the barbary lion which one called the king of the animals and not the lion of Africa. In all the cases, thanks to its breadth, this lion was regarded as most powerful of the felid.
POSSIBLE SURVIVING INDIVIDUALS ?
It is hardly easy to have more recent news on the project of reintroduction of the species. In July 2003, the birth of lion cubs resulting from the Moroccan stock was celebrated with the Amneville zoo, in direct relationship with the project. It is quite probable however that this idea never succeeds. However, since it is always of topicality and that it illustrates well the problem of reintroductions decided after the destruction of a species, which is not without us to point out the situation of our clean large predatory, it seems to us interesting to propose this article to you which falls under the problems of the conservation of the animals.
